Vacation Flashback: The Rainbow State

There’s something special about taking a road trip. Maybe it’s the explorer in me, but I love being able to stop wherever and whenever I want along the way. One of my favourite road trips was when I drove around the island of Maui with my hubby. I’m pretty sure we drove through every type of terrain possible: from lush forests to Mars-like conditions!

We came across some remarkable vegetation, like these psychedelic rainbow eucalyptus trees:

We took the famous Hana Highway and stayed at the spectacular Ekena. My photos really don’t do this gem any justice…

Oh and the food in Maui was fantastic. Highlights? We ate some mouthwatering food at Bruddah Hut (a food truck near Hana). And on our way to Lahaina, we stopped off at the Hali’imaile General Store. There is a reason Chef Bev Gannon has won so many awards!

The most memorable part of our trip was a horseback ride that began at the Maui Stables (native Hawaiian owned and operated). The ride was guided by a real cowboy who taught us about the history of his ancestors, botany and other cultural tidbits. It was so nice to sit at the top of the mountain and be still for a few moments…

The west side of the island was an completely different world. If you’re looking to be spoiled, this is the place to be. We stayed at the beautiful Hyatt Regency, shopped at luxury stores and even attended a private Pat Benatar concert!

There is so much to see and do in Maui. Here are a few more recos:

  • Visit the Peter Lik gallery in Lahaina
  • Explore the Shops at Wailea
  • Check out all the local, fresh fruit at Laulima Farm in Hana
  • Take a stroll on Kaihalulu Red Sand Beach
  • Visit Maui’s Black Sand Beach in Waianapanapa State Park
  • Eat lots of pineapple and try breadfruit just for fun
  • Take a hike in Haleakala National Park
  • Feast, dance and be merry at the Old Lahaina Luau
  • Go strawberry picking at Kula Country Farms
  • Make sure you go snorkelling/scuba diving if you can! The marine life is incredible.
  • And of course, I can’t go anywhere without visiting a winery or two. Definitely try the pineapple wine at Maui’s Winery.
