What began as a dinner party with a handful of friends in Paris 25 years ago has now become an internationally-celebrated picnic en masse, an ethereal event known as Dîner en Blanc. Dressed in all-white attire, over 10 000 people worldwide venture out once a year to dine, drink and dance in public spaces in their respective cities.
This year, the team behind Dîner en Blanc Toronto brought the elegant flash-mob to an unconventional destination: a parking lot just west of Regent Park. Although some guests were disappointed with the secret venue (last year’s event was held at the more scenic Fort York), I felt the choice was thought-provoking and provided an interesting backdrop for the evening’s festivities.
It was quite a spectacular scene; over 1, 600 white-clad guests gathered at specific rallying points around Toronto and converged at the secret location. Participants hauled their multi-course meals, tables, chairs and dinnerware across the city as onlookers watched in awe.
“Toronto’s enthusiastic embrace of Dîner en Blanc is a testament to our unparalleled passion for both food and fashion,” said Nicholas Wong, host of Toronto’s Dîner en Blanc. I couldn’t agree more, our city has huge love for food and fashion – something that was clearly evident in the beautiful spreads and outfits we spotted…
Throughout the night, diners enjoyed their culinary delights, drinks (due to city bylaws, the organizers had to supply the booze – unlike other BYOB Dîner En Blanc events around the globe) and entertainment…
My favourite memory was when all the guests waved their sparklers to signal the dancing and partying portion of the evening…
But the best part of Dîner en Blanc – and what makes the evening truly special regardless of where it’s held in the world – are the friends you get to share it with (both new and old)…
It was a spectacular experience to dine with so many fun, friendly people in a public space. I’m making it my goal to visit as many Dîner en Blanc festivities around the world as possible! If you want to attend next year, make sure you get on their coveted wait list (thousands were on it this year) unless you know a member who can invite you as their guest. They thrive on exclusivity!
