EXPLORED

The Toronto Zoo In The Winter

December 3, 2013

While most people like to visit the Toronto Zoo during the summer, my favourite time to explore is in the winter. I love walking around the beautiful property all bundled up (they have over 10 km of walking trails). And because the crowds thin out during the colder months, I find it’s the perfect time to observe the animals. And observe we did! Me and my hubby witnessed some pretty special moments when we dropped by a couple of weeks ago. Here are some of my faves:

1) For the first time in my life, I heard a pack of wolves howl together. It was so eerie and beautiful.

2) Then we saw a group of ring-tailed lemurs taking a siesta – aww so cute and fuzzy!

3) I spotted the prettiest pigeon I’ve ever seen. The Victoria crowned pigeon is one of the largest in the world and can grow to be the size of a large chicken!

4) We watched a polar bear go for a relaxing swim…

5) We loved this pensive meerkat. I couldn’t help but sing Hakuna Matata as we approached the little guy.

6) And my personal favourite: we saw a pregnant gorilla. I studied the Western Lowland Gorillas at the Toronto Zoo for an entire year during my University days so I feel like they’re my extended family (and am convinced they recognize me). It was so nice to visit Ngozi while she’s pregnant. I can’t wait to meet her baby in the new year!

Sigh, we had such an incredible day filled with magical moments. I always leave the Toronto Zoo feeling re-energized. The animals creatively inspire me (with their beautiful colours, shapes and patterns) and pique my curiosity (with their amusing behaviours). Here are a few more photos I snapped throughout the day:

The Toronto Zoo is open 364 days a year so if you haven’t experienced it in the winter, I highly recommend you bundle up and give it a shot!

Special thanks to the Toronto Zoo for our media passes. As always, all reviews and opinions are entirely my own.
