Jamaica is quickly becoming one of my favourite Caribbean destinations. Yes, it is stunning. But it’s the beautiful people who make the island so special. And for me, one of the highlights of flying back is getting a chance to hang out with my local adventure buddy, Carolyn at Barrett Adventures. This incredible woman took my breath away last year when she introduced me to Jamaica’s Blue Mountains (more about that here) so I couldn’t wait to explore a different part of the island with her. This time we hopped on her private yacht in Montego Bay and cruised out to sea…
Although I’ve been sailing numerous times, I’ve never had this kind of adrenaline-pumping adventure before. The wind and waves picked up almost immediately after we motored out of the MoBay Yacht Club and had us clenching for dear life (granted, we were warned that our sail would be more “exciting” in the afternoon). At times were were full tilt and could feel our hair grazing the water: I’ve never felt so alive!
I quickly came to realize that Carolyn isn’t just a history buff and expert botanist (things I learned about her during my last visit), but she is a sailing Queen! I’d heard about her countless sailing adventures around the Caribbean before, but seeing her in action was something else: the woman has sea legs like no other. But not for a moment did I feel unsafe; if anyone can navigate these waters, it’s Carolyn…
After the heart-racing venture out to sea, we headed for calmer waters to snorkel, swim and indulge in some snacks. I loved floating on a pool mattress with beer in one hand and fresh mangoes (from Carolyn’s own backyard) in the other. Sounds simple, but it’s one of those travel memories that I’ll remember for years to come…
Well, that and the fact that I had a chance to steer a yacht! My friend Renee is a pro, but it was my first time and I loved it.
Sadly, we didn’t spot any dolphins, but that gives us more reason to go back. And next time, we’re doing the full-day sail that heads over to Secrets Reef for some epic snorkelling (8 hrs – $600 for up to three people). One thing to note if you’re thinking about going out to sea on this beaut forty-foot yacht: this is NOT a booze cruise (although beer and drinks are provided). This is the kind of experience you want to sign up for if you’re looking to see Jamaica from a different angle, add a little adventure to your vacay and hang out with locals who love the island to pieces.
The half-day sail was complimentary for me and my friend. As always, all reviews and opinions are entirely my own.
