Ever find yourself standing in front of a huge shelf at the LCBO right before a holiday party trying to quickly decide what wine to buy for the host? Well I have. Many times. The sea of wines can be super overwhelming – especially when you’re in a rush – so to make life a bit easier this season, I made it a mission to get some recos from a group of wine experts at an iYellow Wine Club event I recently attended. Very rarely do I have the opportunity to sample so many wines in one location (50 local wines to be exact) guided by passionate wine-lovers so I thought I’d share my findings with you guys to help ease the holiday pains. Here are five Ontario wines under $25 that were a hit at the event:
Wine: Rosewood Estates Winery – Süssreserve Riesling 2014
Price: $12.95
Tasting Notes: Aromas and flavours are of flowers, honey, peach and melon. Crisp and fresh with acidity balancing the natural sweetness.
Food Pairings: This wine pairs nicely with spiced pork tacos, sushi, salmon, shellfish, ceviche and German cuisine (like pork chops with roasted apples).
Wine: Vintage Ink – Rite of Passage Chardonnay 2014
Price: $16.95
Tasting Notes: Aromas and flavours are of ripe apple, baked pear and vanilla with a dry, medium-full body and a crisp burst of acidity.
Food Pairings: This wine pairs well with lobster, tuna, turkey, salmon, a creamy pasta or marinated chicken.
Wine: Mike Weir Winery – Pinot Noir 2013
Price: $16.95
Tasting Notes: Flavours are of dried red cherry and cooked blueberries with a mix of earthy spice that adds intensity to this medium-bodied wine.
Food Pairings: This wine pairs nicely with bacon-wrapped veal tenderloin, beef risotto, salmon or rainbow trout.
Wine: Small Talk Vineyards – Recap Syrah 2012
Price: $20.25
Tasting Notes: The aromas and flavours of this full-bodied wine are of ripe red berries, pepper, smoke and cedar with a tease of spice on the finish.
Food Pairings: This wine pairs very nicely with a roasted rack of lamb, as well as pizza and pasta dishes.
Wine: Rosewood Estates Winery – Pinot Noir 2012
Price: $21.95
Tasting Notes: The aromas and flavours of this medium-bodied dry wine are of red berry fruit and earthy spices that balance well with the tangy sour cherry and ripe bramble berry fruits. The wine has nice structure and a smooth mouthfeel.
Food Pairings: This wine pairs well with beef, sausage, turkey, roasted cauliflower or beet soup.
A special thanks to iYellow for hosting me at their Harvest Ontario (#iYellowHarvest) event! As always, all reviews and opinions are entirely our own.
