My friends at Expedia.ca sent me on a journey to London as part of their #BigWorldExplorer campaign so I could share some gems with you. This is the third of five posts featuring one of my favourite cities on the planet!
Although London isn’t filled with towering skyscrapers like other urban centres, the historical sites and modern structures that dot the city still make for a captivating skyline. One that seems to be changing by the minute (in fact, the number of planned tall buildings has doubled in two years). The bright side? With inevitable growth comes new vantage points and places to photograph. On my most recent visit, I searched high and low for the best views of London (both free and paid access) and am sharing them below so you guys know where to head for a great shot of the transforming city…
Primrose Hill (Free)
At 63 metres above sea level, the summit of Primrose Hill is one of my favourite spots in the city. A protected viewpoint in London (one of six), it offers spectacular views and also happens to be the perfect spot to gather for a picnic (more on that here).
London Eye
Hop on the world’s largest cantilevered observation wheel and embark on a 30 minute ride. Originally intended as a temporary structure, the London Eye is now a permanent fixture. On a clear day, you’ll get a great view of historical buildings like the Houses of Parliament, Buckingham Palace and St. Paul’s Cathedral. No wonder it’s the UK’s most popular paid for visitor attraction! Tip: buy your tickets online and save up to %15 (you can snag them here).
Emirates Air Line Cable Car
For a bird’s-eye view of east London, take a ride on the city’s only cable car. Crossing the River Thames between Greenwich Peninsula and the Royal Docks, “flights” are approximately 10 mins each way. To save a bit of cash, purchase the Emirates Air Line Discovery Experience with your Oyster card (the round trip ticket is £8.40). Oh, and they offer a night flight experience (same cost) after 7 pm every day. The round trip flight is extended to 25 mins — a relaxing and romantic way to take in London’s night sky…
Tate Modern (Free)
I’m convinced that there is no better view of St Paul’s Cathedral than from CAFÉ at the Tate Modern. You can pop by for a quick glance or grab a drink/light meal and enjoy the view. New this year: you can also head to the top floor of the Switch House to check out the open viewing terrace which offers 360-degree views of the London skyline (free access).
Shangri-La Hotel, The Shard
Although there’s an observation deck on level 69 and the open air Skydeck at level 72 at The Shard (Western Europe’s tallest building), I think TĪNG at the Shangri–La Hotel sits at just the right height to take in the London skyline. Perched on the 35th floor at The Shard, it’s also a great spot for afternoon tea (more on that here). This was our view as we devoured delectable sandwiches and pastries…
Sky Garden (Free)
Located at the top of the Walkie-Talkie building (20 Fenchurch Street), Sky Garden is the capital’s highest public garden. You’ll find flowers, herbs, ferns and shrubs on the lush terraces (each have a different theme — from prehistoric forest to mountain ravine). Best part? The breathtaking view from the open terrace! Note: this is a very popular spot so make sure to book your free visit well in advance!
