In an effort to find the best eats around the globe, I’m connecting with food-loving locals and putting my stomach in their hands. Follow along as I challenge them to take me to five of their fave spots for my Eating With A Local series. The only criteria? Good food. The kind you want to share with friends.
Local Glutton (LG): Sureha. London resident. Lover of food, fashion and travel. Can’t live without cheese. Hates fatty bits and runny eggs. Her mom is her culinary hero: a phenomenal cook whom she could never duplicate. Last meal on earth? Berners Tavern mac and cheese with ox cheek and bone-marrow crumble.
Our Food Hop Around Greenwich, London:
1. Victus & Bibo
What do you love about this place?
Sureha (LG): Everything is always so well-seasoned with gentle yet fragrant spices. My fiancé and I often visit this food stall when we’re at Greenwich Market so I have some fond memories here.
My Two Cents: Flavourful food, fresh ingredients and filling portions… what else could a gal ask for from a food stall? Apparently I’m not the only one who thinks it’s amaze: be prepared for a long queue (yes, it’s worth it).
Who would you bring here?
Sureha (LG): I think markets are really romantic so I’d bring someone I love. It’s fun to take risks and try different cuisines together!
My Two Cents: Friends who enjoy (or want to try) international flavours.
If you could only order one dish, what would it be?
Sureha (LG): The Lamb and Halloumi Wrap. Squeaky cheese, delicious hummus and nicely-seasoned lamb!
My Two Cents: I second that! The Lamb and Halloumi is a great wrap to share (note: they won’t cut it for you) and a bargain at £5. Can’t wait to take my Greek hubster there for the halloumi — he would love.
2. Brazilian Churros
What do you love about this place?
Sureha (LG): Fried, doughy goodness with a crispy and golden shell. What’s not to love?!
My Two Cents: This food stall in Greenwich Market has a vibrant and warm glow. Good vibes fueled by their love for the environment and the core ethical principles they’re guided by (they support biodegradable, local, organic and fair trade practices). And their churros? Incredible! I couldn’t believe they were made with vegan dough.
Who would you bring here?
Sureha (LG): My fiancé.
My Two Cents: My BFF – she has a sweet tooth and loves churros.
If you could only order one dish, what would it be?
Sureha (LG): You can order the churros filled with chocolate fudge or dulce de leche. I can never decide so I ask for half and half!
My Two Cents: I prefer the churros with the homemade dulce de leche. It is divine.
3. The Orangery
What do you love about this place?
Sureha (LG): It’s such a peaceful and beautiful place for afternoon tea. I think it’s exactly what people love about England.
My Two Cents: This place is a hidden gem (yeay for local intel). Nestled inside the Fan Museum, the room is bright and lined with a gorgeous mural, the Japanese garden is majestic and their afternoon tea is an incredible value (tea/coffee, scone, cream & jam and freshly-baked cakes all for £8.00 per person, plus £4 for the museum admission).
Who would you bring here?
Sureha (LG): My sisters! It’s a great place to sip tea and gossip with the girls.
My Two Cents: I think my mom would really enjoy the tranquil afternoon tea experience at this lovely little spot in Greenwich.
If you could only order one dish, what would it be?
Sureha (LG): Afternoon tea of course! With Earl Grey tea.
My Two Cents: Samesies! To be honest, I’m not sure they serve anything else at The Orangery.
4. Sticks’n’Sushi
What do you love about this place?
Sureha (LG): Great quality food that’s always consistent. I particularly like the Greenwich location: it has a very relaxed ambiance.
My Two Cents: The food presentation is on point at this resto! Beautiful plating, well-seasoned dishes and possibly the most beautifully-photographed menu I’ve ever seen (which also happens to be super extensive — so many dishes to choose from!)
Who would you bring here?
Sureha (LG): A group of friends.
My Two Cents: My hubby! He loves sushi and would really enjoy the yakitori sticks.
If you could only order one dish, what would it be?
Sureha (LG): A good selection of sticks — especially the Ramuyaki (lamb chop with miso herb butter) and Yakiniku (rib-eye beef with Japanese marinade). Oh, and miso soup!
My Two Cents: The Hotate Kataifi (scallops in kataifi with miso aioli, trout row & cress) has great texture and flavour profiles.
5. Paul Rhodes Bakery
What do you love about this place?
Sureha (LG): Someone who loves Greenwich quite possibly more than I do recommended this place to me.
My Two Cents: It’s a great spot to grab a quick coffee or sweet treat as you walk around Greenwich/Old Royal Naval College.
Who would you bring here?
Sureha (LG): A friend or a book.
My Two Cents: There’s limited seating so I’d recommend popping by and grabbing your goodies to go. It’s also a nice place to visit alone and people-watch from the large windows.
If you could only order one dish, what would it be?
Sureha (LG): Chocolate éclair.
My Two Cents: Mini Frasier (photographed above) – it’s a delicate and beautiful dessert.
