We all need to escape the city once in a while — the lights, the noise, the chaos. And what better time to do this than during the winter months? With the stress and frenzy of the holidays, a winter getaway can provide a much-needed dose of peace and tranquility. For this, I packed up my car and headed north to the quaint, snowy village of Alton (approx. 1 hr drive from Toronto). Excited to experience Millcroft Inn & Spa – an elegant countryside escape I’ve heard about for years – I pulled into the property and was greeted by birds chirping overhead…
Ah, the crisp air, serene atmosphere and historic setting (it was originally a knitting mill in 1881). Just what I needed to unwind. With room key in hand, I crossed the snowy bridge decked with garland and passed a giant, frozen waterfall to my left — I couldn’t help but take in the scenery and vast forest surrounding the Inn…
I was told about the trails here (which you can explore on snowshoes provided by the hotel) so I popped by the concierge to learn about the various paths. Ranging in length from 0.3 to 0.9 km and from difficulty levels ‘easy’ to ‘difficult’, they are a great way to get a sense of how stunning the property truly is. So this is exactly what I set out to do, after checking out my accommodation, of course…
The room I was given was very cozy and clean, with a back porch that faced a winter wonderland. The newly-renovated wood-burning fireplace was much appreciated on the cold winter day and night. I built myself three fires during my stay to keep toasty warm!
Other fine details were the heated bathroom floors, stocked Keurig coffee machine, family room for lounging and close proximity to the spa and hot spring baths. Oh yes, the state-of-the-art spa. I’d be remiss not to highlight the award-winning gem. It has something for everyone: from the hydrotherapy rooms and fitness centre to the herbal steam rooms, sauna and polar plunge pool. For a breathtaking view of their protected woodlands and meadows you’ll want to spend some time sitting fireside in the Woodlands Lounge. I personally loved unwinding in their spacious, heated pools to the sound of the waterfall — such a relaxing experience while still remaining outside in the snowy atmosphere (bonus: hot spring passes are complimentary for overnight guests).
But the highlight of the trip for me? A dinner at Headwaters Restaurant. If you’re a foodie, this restaurant is not to be missed during your stay. The dishes here are nothing short of spectacular. I tried the mouthwatering black cod, market vegetables as a side, and the apple trio dessert…
I could not have been happier with it all, including the wine list. Having heard rave reviews about this award-winning restaurant, I had high expectations and can happily report that it holds up to its reputation! I was lucky enough to snag the best seat in the house which overlooks Mill Pond and Shaw’s Creek Falls (tip: be sure to request this table in advance to enhance your experience)…
What a great way to spend a few winter days and nights. The kind of winter getaway that left me feeling relaxed and recharged. I look forward to returning to Millcroft in the near future. It really is the perfect blend of urban sophistication and country charm.
A huge thanks to Millcroft Inn & Spa for hosting me. As always, all opinions are my own. For more information about this four-diamond country retreat, visit their website. They have some great seasonal packages!

February 13, 2017 at 11:26 amThis looks like a great getaway! Something to keep in mind for our next local getaway.
We did a little couples getaway over the Christmas break at the Adventure Lodge near Algonquin Park. The cabins were super cosy, and with free day passes to the park, great hiking opportunities 🙂 This seems just up our alley!
