As spring has sprung and we dream of idyllic vacations in Europe, we realize if we can’t get to Europe why can’t we have Europe come to us?! Just our luck. SIAL 2017, the biggest food and trade fair in Canada, is the answer to our European food dreams (which is the next best thing to a vacation!). Though mainly focused on the retail, catering and food processing industry, the trade show is a great way for the public to further understand — and taste — food trends from across the ocean that will soon hit Canadian shelves.

The European Union (EU) is the region of honour at this year’s show and for good reason: trade relations have deepened between the EU and Canada upon the signing of the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA). Phil Hogan, European Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, says: “We are confident that CETA will bring more European products to discerning Canadian consumers.” — hooray for our taste buds! 60 delegates of European food and beverage companies will accompanying Commissioner Hogan to the show, seeking new business opportunities in Canada and showcasing their products. Among the wide variety of agri-food products are fruit, vegetables, fresh and preserved meats, milk and dairy products, and wine and spirits. So: all of the good stuff!
If you decide to pop by SIAL 2017 (which we highly recommend you do if you share the same passion for food and drink as we do), keep your eyes peeled for culturally significant regional products from Europe that are protected by geographic indications such as Scotch Whisky, Pecorino or Roquefort cheese.
Oh, and make sure you don’t miss out on some fun activities planned to highlight the diversity of European products including a cooking show with Eric Chong (first season winner of Masterchef Canada); an EU-Canadian products pairing; and a mixologist contest with Chantelle Gabino of Parts & Labour. We’ll be at the show looking for new trends so stay tuned!
SIAL 2017 takes place at the Enercare Centre from May 2 to 4, 2017. For more information, visit: https://sialcanada.com/
