Nothing says I love and appreciate you like a piece of steak. Am I right?! Ok, well, for us carnivores anyways… I always associate going out for steak with special occasions and — in my opinion — there is no occasion more special than Mother’s Day. Albeit brief, it’s a time to celebrate those who brought us into this world, poured every ounce of their being into raising us and showered us with unconditional love. Having just given birth to little L a few weeks ago, I’m starting to truly understand how hard my own mom worked to make me the woman I am today. She’s been my everything over the years: my teacher, my doctor, my provider, my protector… I now appreciate the countless hours she devoted to raising me, many of which (like most moms) were spent in the kitchen washing, chopping, cooking, cleaning. And guess what?! She’s doing it alllll over again. That’s because my beautiful and incredibly altruistic mom has stayed with us from the day we welcomed little L to help with our parenting journey. Something I will be eternally grateful for. Which is why this year, I wanted to treat her to an EXTRA special night out — one that takes us both out of the kitchen, rids us from our cleaning duties and allows us to have a meal TOGETHER (a rarity with a newborn). Steak and a bottle of vino were non-negotiable so we decided to share my very first Mother’s Day at The Keg Steakhouse + Bar…
Oh, but not just any Keg — my absolute FAVE location: The Keg Mansion! You see, I’ve been feasting at the historic property for over a decade and couldn’t wait to share the experience with my mom (fun fact: the mansion was built in 1867 and was once home to the Massey’s)…
Not only is the building gorgeous (it just oozes character), but the food and service at The Keg Steakhouse + Bar is always spot on. And for a special occasion dinner that’s super important to me; my mom and I don’t get much bonding time so I wanted the dinner to be perfect — and it truly was!
We began the evening with cocktails (oh how I missed those during my pregnancy). I ordered the White Sangria made with white wine, peach schnapps, Grand Marnier, peach juice, mint, green apples, peach slices and Somersby apple cider float and mom got the Sparkling Pomegranate martini made with Absolut vodka, pomegranate juice, simple syrup and sparkling wine…
Next up: appetizers. I can NEVER decide at The Keg so we ordered a few different appies to share (my eyes are always bigger than my stomach). The Shrimp Cocktail and Baked Garlic Shrimp were our faves. Although the preparations are quite different — the shrimp cocktail is light with plump and juicy shrimp perched on a martini glass while the garlic shrimp is blanketed with a layer of gooey cheese and baked to perfection — they are both addictive…
Then came the main event of the evening: STEAK. We are Keg Classics fans so mom ordered the New York Striploin and I got the Filet Mignon with Dungeness Crab (in season now — woot!) For the accompaniments we both ordered the Twice Baked Potato without hesitation — I mean, is there a better side at The Keg?! I think not…
Dessert was so good I forgot to snap a pic: Mini Crème Brûlée for her, Mini Fudge Brownie for me. We devoured both as we digested our epic meal, laughed and enjoyed our much-needed non-baby related adult convos (which included a full-blown discussion about paranormal activity — yup, spirits are believed to inhabit the mansion)…
Le sigh, it really was the perfect night out with my mama bear. She was blown away by our experience at The Keg Mansion and can’t wait to return to celebrate other special occasions (but who needs an excuse for steak really?! lol). What are your plans for Mother’s Day?! If you’re like me and looking for a resto with a comfortable atmosphere, amaze service and delish food, I highly recommend spending Mother’s Day at The Keg Steakhouse + Bar. But make sure to snag your resos now because they fill up fast. Happy mama’s day to all the moms out there!!
