Have you heard of Nergi berries?! They may just be the cutest fruit I’ve EVER laid eyes on. I mean, just look at them!!
What Are Nergi Berries?
New to Canada (welcome little guys), Nergi berries are also known as the Siberian kiwi or baby kiwi. They are sweet and slightly tart, have a thin edible skin and are harvested in Europe (France, Italy, Portugal, Spain and Ukraine) from mid-August to early-September…
For those wondering if this fruit is a GMO: I’m happy to report that it is NOT. Nergi berries are obtained through natural pollination and are a result of New Zealand botanists interbreeding plants to improve overall quality. The result? A versatile berry that is recommended by nutritionists.
Why Eat Nergi Berries?
They’re not just cute, Nergi Berries are good for you. But you don’t need to take my word for it, here’s what the lovely Abbey Sharp has to say about them:
“As a new mom, I know how important it is that our kids get in lots of antioxidant-rich fruits and vegetables every day. Having healthy, portable snacks on hand, like a container of Nergi berries, is a great way to satisfy a sweet craving nutritiously. Kids age 2-3 years old need 4 daily servings of fruits and vegetables, 4-8 years old need 5, and 9-13 years old need 6 servings, so having a container of fresh fruit like Nergi berries in my bag is a great way to ensure everyone’s getting enough.” – Abbey Sharp, Nutritionist
Since Little L is addicted to berries, I’m definitely adding Nergi berries to our snack repertoire. They’re perfect for his tiny little hands and packed with goodness. Here’s a breakdown of the nutrition deets:
Where Can You Get Nergi Berries?
Nergi berries are now available in most Loblaws, Zehrs or Sobeys supermarkets across Ontario. Just look for plastic punnets that look like this in the berry aisles:
You may also spot them in cardboard punnets, 750g trays or a 90g shaker. Bonus: all of the packaging is recyclable because the environment is a high priority for the brand. Yeay!
