5 months. That’s how long our lives have been turned upside down. While there’s no question that this pandemic has touched virtually every human on this planet in one way or another, parents are facing a few extra layers of complexities. This means there’s zero time for romance. ZERO. With Little Luka’s daycare still closed and elderly grandparents, hubby and I have been on full-time parenting duties. Queue the world of endless lists, working early and late hours of the day and putting relationships on the back-burner. Quite frankly, we are EXHAUSTED, running out of steam and knew we needed a kid-free escape to recharge and reconnect. So we packed our bags and headed on a romantic glamping getaway to Long Point Eco Adventures, a place I had bookmarked years ago…
Glamping At Long Point Eco Adventures
Why Long Point Eco Adventures? Because it looked both exciting AND relaxing. Listen, I’m all for camping, but it’s hard work putting up tents, preparing food, lighting campfires etc. which was not how we envisioned our days away. Glamping at Long Point Eco Adventures meant we’d be surrounded by beautiful landscapes (hello biosphere reserve and gorgeous marsh) and actually get to enjoy each others company. Oh, and we’d call this sweet glamping tent our home…
Did I mention the Wilderness Suites have their own washrooms? It gets better. We had electricity, air conditioning, hardwood floors and an outdoor shower! Goodbye camping, hello glamping…
Romantic Experiences At Long Point Eco Adventures And In Norfolk County
Experiences are a completely different beast when you have kids (more prep, shorter time to enjoy and can ultimately could end up being a bust depending on their mood), so we really look forward to romantic getaways that allow us to fully immerse ourselves in activities. Plus, there’s always something special about trying things for the first time together, so we squeezed in a couple of those in our itinerary too…
SUP Lessons With Long Point Eco Adventures
This was hubby’s first time trying stand-up paddleboarding and we couldn’t have asked for a better instructor. We met Ty Backus onsite at Long Point Eco Adventures and followed his car to beautiful Turkey Point. Within a few minutes he had hubster feeling comfortable enough to explore the calm lake. I was so proud of him! Ty also offers sunset SUP sessions so definitely sign up for those if you want a more romantic experience.
Norfolk County Winery & Brewery Hop
If you’re lucky enough to travel with a DD like me, I encourage you to visit as many wineries and breweries in Norfolk County as possible. But if you both like to drink, Long Point Eco Adventures may just be your dream getaway because it has Hometown Brew Co. onsite AND Burning Kiln Winery across the road (literally, there is a walking path from your tents to the winery).
Burning Kiln is a gem of a winery. The beautiful estate, award-winning wines and Canned Heat’s Patio Restaurant are all reasons to visit. Do not leave without trying their Canned Heat Burger or Blue By Moo pizza! With a glass or two of vino of course (my picks: Cureman’s Chard and Inferno).
As mentioned, Hometown Brew Co. microbrewery is onsite at Long Point Eco Adventures (brilliant). It’s actually located inside their old zip-lining caves! You can either sip beer on their SeaCan viewing deck…
OR enjoy their brews on the gorgeous Marshview Patio. Order the Hazy Susan and fresh Lake Erie Perch Tacos. You can thank me later…
When we were driving around Norfolk County I saw a cute fruit & veg stand on the side of the road so we pulled over (classic Solmaz LOL). I saw a yellow umbrella in the distance so we explored further and discovered this beaut winery on the other side of the property…
Inasphere Wines has an incredible view and an amazing peach sangria. The perfect romantic spot to sit back and relax…
Sunset Kayak Tour
If you’re game for a romantic paddle, I recommend heading out with BAER Fishing Adventures for their sunset kayak. Bobby is the best — he’s super knowledgeable and will show you how to use a Hobie kayak which is mainly operated by paddling. Look ma, no hands!
The tour can be arranged for sunrise, morning or sunset and takes approximately 2.5 hours. You’ll explore the inner bay of Lake Erie together and admire the unique landscapes. If you’re a photog, ask Bobby to take you to Big Creek (see the sunset section below and you’ll understand why).
Beaches In Norfolk County
We loved swimming at Turkey Point Provincial Park and Long Point Provincial Park. All the beaches we checked out were sandy and the water was warm and quite shallow.
Long Point Eco Adventures even packed us a little picnic so we could enjoy lunch on the beach!
While some of the beaches (like Port Dover Beach) are closed, you can still enjoy the views & beachy cocktails together on the Erie Beach Hotel Patio!
Romantic Sunset Spots in Norfolk County
Sunsets, a natural phenomenon most parents have to skip because of conflicting bath/bed times. If you know me, you know I LIVE for sunsets and Norfolk County blew me away with theirs. We saw two during our stay and both were glorious. I highly recommend heading to Big Creek National Wildlife Area one night…
And if you want to catch the sunset while sipping a cocktail, head to The Jetty Bar and Grill. They’re known for their sangria towers so don’t skip those!
Ice Cream Parlour Date
Step inside Twins Ice Cream Parlour in Port Rowen and you’ll immediately be transported to the days gone by. The place is teeming with memorabilia and, quite frankly, looks like a movie set! The smell of fresh, homemade waffle cones is irresistible, but it won’t be easy deciding what flavour to get. I recommend the St Jacob’s Apple Pie, Salty Caramel and Niagara Peach. So SO good.
Axe Throwing At Long Point Eco Adventures
Nothing says romance like throwing some axes together. The staff at Long Point Eco Adventures will give you a 101 and then you can see who has the best aim…
Blueberry Picking At Blueberry Hill Estates
Did you know that Norfolk County is known as Ontario’s Garden? And for good reason! We saw so many beaut fruit and veg being farmed and were very lucky to catch the tail end of blueberry season at Blueberry Hill Estates. Hubby and I had the entire field to ourselves! Very romantic. Pick Your Own usually runs from mid-July to mid-August and is $14 per basket.
Bonus: they also offer wine and cider tastings and you can even have a little picnic onsite!
Campfire & Stargazing Sesh At Long Point Eco Adventures
VIP campfire service? Yup! Just text the staff at Long Point Eco Adventures and they’ll come light your personal campfire. Then cozy up under a blanket and look up. One of my favourite things about this property is that it’s a dark sky reserve! That means you’ll see the most beautiful sky even with the naked eye. And if you love stars as much as I do, take note that they also have an observatory onsite (closed now because of Covid-19, but it shall one day re-open)!
Safety Precautions and Protocols At Long Point Eco Adventures
I received a lot of questions about safety protocols while on the trip so I thought I’d address them all here. Did we feel safe? Absolutely. To begin with, glamping is naturally isolated (way more than a hotel at least) so you’re physically distant from other glampers and don’t share any hallways or elevators. Most of the accommodation options have their own washroom facilities so you don’t need to worry about sharing (as you likely would if you went camping). All of the staff wear masks, check-in is via text (keys are left in your tent) and all of the common areas are constantly being cleaned/sanitized. In a nutshell: if you’re a bit hesitant about making travel plans during a pandemic, I think you’ll feel at ease while glamping at Long Point Eco Adventures!
Long Point Eco Adventures In Fall/Winter
I’ve been told the Carolinian forest that surrounds Long Point Eco Adventures explodes with fall colours so I’m hoping to return to see it with my own eyes! I didn’t get a chance to try mountain biking (they offer rentals and have 90 km of continuous trails) and think that would be the perfect fall activity. The brewery and winery remain open all year so you’ll always have great food and drink within walking distance. And I’m certain the entire property would be incredibly romantic during cozy season with all the fire pits, string lights and gorgeous fall colours. Do yourself a favour and book now if you want to visit in coming months. Trust me, this place is a gem and books out fast!!
A huge thanks to Long Point Eco Adventures and Ontario’s Southwest for hosting us and sponsoring this post. As always, all reviews and opinions are entirely my own.
